چکیده

Shigella dysenteriae type 1 is known to cause epidemics of bacillary dysentery worldwide. In 1984, an extensive outbreak of bacillary dysentery swept through several districts of West Bengal, including the state capital Kolkata, and subsequently, spread to other parts of India (1). Multidrug-resistant S. dysenteriae type 1 was identified as the sole aetiological agent in this outbreak. In the later period, the number of shigellosis cases gradually declined.

Shigella dysenteriae Serotype 1, Kolkata, India

Since July 2002, bacteriologically confirmed shigellosis cases have increased, and multidrug-resistant Shigella dysenteriae serotype 1 strains have reemerged in patients hospitalized with diarrhea in Kolkata, India. The isolated strains of S. dysenteriae 1 showed resistance to chloramphenicol (80%), ampicillin (100%), tetracycline (100%), co-trimoxazole (100%), nalidixic acid (100%), norfloxaci...

Clonal multidrug-resistant Shigella dysenteriae type 1 strains associated with epidemic and sporadic dysenteries in eastern India.

Multidrug-resistant strains of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 were implicated in three outbreaks and sporadic cases of dysentery in eastern India in 2002 and 2003. After a hiatus of 14 years, this pathogen reemerged with an altered antibiotic resistance pattern. In addition to ampicillin, co-trimoxazole, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, and nalidixic acid, all the recent strains were resistant to no...

Changing epidemiology of shigellosis and emergence of ciprofloxacin-resistant Shigellae in India.

Shigellosis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in India. In contrast to what was reported for the developed world and Iran (1), where Shigella sonnei is common, the occurrence of nalidixic acid resistance is low, and no isolates have been determined to be resistant to fluoroquinolones, for the Indian subcontinent, Shigella flexneri continues to be the most common serogroup isolate...

Emergence of fluoroquinolone resistance in Shigella isolated from Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India.

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands, situated in the Bay of Bengal, is an Union Territory of India. Health care in these islands (population of about 3 50 000) is almost entirely provided by the Government. G.B. Pant Hospital, located at Port Blair, is the only referral hospital in the islands. Bacteriological surveillance carried out by the RMRC, Port Blair at this hospital, has identified shigellos...

Alteration in the GyrA subunit of DNA gyrase and the ParC subunit of topoisomerase IV in Quinolone-resistant Shigella dysenteriae serotype 1 clinical isolates from Kolkata, India.

After the emergence of multidrug-resistant Shigella strains (8, 11), fluoroquinolones, such as ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin, were used in India to treat shigellosis. However, recently, genetically clonal ciprofloxacin-resistant Shigella dysenteriae serotype 1 strains have been isolated from sporadic and epidemic cases of dysentery in southern Asia, including eastern India (1, 9, 12; S. Dutta, ...
